Barry has graduated in Mechanical Engineering from University of Limerick in Ireland. He worked for several years as a project engineer in America and Europe before leaving in 2019 to complete the Data Science Bootcamp at Propulsion Academy in Zurich.
Drawing on his combined engineering industry experience and practical approach to data science gained at Propulsion Academy, Barry is now developing machine learning applications and data science technology stacks. He is especially driven by opportunities to improve processes through programming, design engineering or workflow optimisation.
During his time as Innovator Fellow of ETH Library Lab, Barry developed the application BioDex for ETH Zurich’s Entomological Collection. It aims to accelerate the process of organising the collection and releasing its historic data as a baseline for biodiversity research. The application draws upon a hierarchical image classifier to automatically identify the species of physical butterfly specimen.
After completing the Innovator Fellowship, Barry joined the team of ETH Library Lab as Technical Engineer and Project Support. In his new role he is responsible for the technical on- and off-boarding of new projects, interfacing innovation projects at the lab with the core processes of the IT services at ETH Library and supporting product development.
Outside of the ETH Library Lab, Barry enjoys attending the meetups organised by the city’s active data science community or taking a break from the screen to explore the mountains around Zurich.
